"In 2004 a new gym called Sports Center of the Triad opened 2 minutes from my house. They were running a family special. I told my husband about it and wanted us to join right away. He said we had to have physicals done before we could join. I told him I already had one in November so we could go ahead and join. He wanted the family to start going at the same time.
Because of a cancellation, he was able to get a doctor's appointment right away. While doing a stress test on the treadmill, the doctor noticed something in Bob's EKG. They immediately scheduled him for a dye test. He called me at work to meet him at the hospital. By the time I got there, they had him in a hospital gown and hooked up to monitors and an IV. Every time the nurse turned around, he flashed his white bottom at me. Dr. Al Khori came and explained the procedure then had a nurse take me to the waiting room.
When Dr. Kohri came into the waiting room, he sat down beside me and showed me the weirdest xray I had ever seen. He explained that Bob had 5 blocked arteries and needed to have open heart surgery. He said it needed to be done immediately, but that Bob said he needed to get his affairs in order. The surgery was scheduled for the next morning. That afternoon was a whirlwind of lawyers offices, wills, living wills, bank accounts and IRA's. Why hadn't we taken the time to do this before?
As we lay in bed that night holding each other, Bob said there was something he had never told me. He said his Mother had died in the hospital recovery room after the same operation. We both cried ourselves to sleep.
The next morning came quickly. Once again I found myself in the waiting room. I planned in my mind how we would change our eating habits and make exercise a part of our daily schedule. Why hadn't we done this before?
Dr. Al Khori finally came out and said Bob had come through the surgery just fine. He told me the nurse would be out in an hour to come get me to see Bob. That was the longest hour of my life. Bob and I now eat very healthy and exercise daily."
