Organic Youthing
I've always been concerned with the amount of spraying or the growing of our veggies or protein for that matter because of the commercial desire to get food to market for economic advantages.
I'm happy to eat organic fruit that has not been sprayed, potatoes that I know chemicals have not seeped thru the skin and chicken that has not been given growth hormones.
I've joined a local coop to support organic and local farmers and personally to enjoy my food.
This is a wonderful article today by Holistic Moms Network. I couldn't have explained it better.
WHAT IS . . . ORGANIC?
Defining Organic
There's no doubt that "organic" is hot! According to a recent survey, sales of organic foods and beverages grew from $1 billion in 1990 to more than $24 billion in 2009. Organic non-food sales also reached $1.8 billion in 2009.
What does organic really mean? The Organic Trade Association states that organic production is "a system of farming that maintains and replenishes soil fertility without the use of toxic and persistent pesticides and fertilizers." Foods that are produced organically "are minimally processed without artificial ingredients, preservatives, or irradiation to maintain the integrity of the food."
Organic Certification
How do we know we are getting organic products? The USDA certifies organic foods and products that are made from at least 95% organic ingredients. Smaller farmers who sell less than $5,000 per year in organic products are exempt from certification even though their products may be farmed in accordance with organic standards. If you are buying from small, local farmers, get to know your farmers and their practices to ensure you are getting what you want.
Why Organic?
Why the push for organic products and foods? Because organics are better for you and for the planet. Research shows that organic foods have more antioxidants and nutrients; do not contain synthetic growth hormones, pesticides, or antibiotics; and are not genetically engineered.
In addition, the use of synthetic pesticides to kill insects, weeds, and fungi have dire consequences for our health and the health of our planet. Pesticide exposure has been linked to birth defects, higher rates of breast cancer, low sperm counts, and Parkinson's disease, among others. Nitrogen runoffs from pesticide use have also been implicated in contamination of drinking water; declining fish populations; and the formation of acid rain.

Youthing in the office with Dogs

I’m not sure of the specifics or qualitative results of ‘pets and health’ but I do see many connections with people, pets, love and engagement. I do know that dogs are used to visit hospitals (particularly kids and seniors) – the dogs do lift the spirits and perhaps help healing.
I also recall the ‘dog’ squads employed after 911 to both the first responders and victims – with success.
Pets (and dogs in particular) seem to give off calmness and grounding to us humans and add to positive view of our everyday.
I found this article – “Dogs in the office unleash productivity” interesting and funny. This article does add another element – productivity! Pets in the office may actually help us be more porductive. It may be that as we are more calm, focused and balance we are more productive.

Youthing Brain - Strike while the Chemistry is hot

We are all familiar with our natural rhythms (times of the day we feel energized or slow) and that some of us are night owls and larks (early risers). Some of us are full of energy and life at 6 AM and some of us are grumpy bears at 8AM.
In general we associate these up and downs are our body chemistry and to a degree they are – but recent research now indicates that we include our brains natural rhythms. Our bodies show hourly changes in temperature, weight, blood pressure, heart beats and respiration. New research into the brain chemistry, with the application of new understanding of the sections of the brain that influence thinking and emotions have produced some interesting observations.
Now the trick is to align the body and brain with their individual circadian rhythms.

Vitamin D and Calcium - Caution
Wednesday, December 01 2010 16:34
I've been reading and listening to several news sources this week and have seen many snippets about new studies and research into the safe and effective levels of Vitamin D and Calcium.
Now we know that Vitamin D has been touted recently as an important part of bone health and we have been told to increase our intake of both Vitamin D and Calcium. This message has been stressed for women that were told that their need was great and their diets were insufficient. Therefore the entire health community began to stress D and Calcium supplements - and in very large doses.
Here is my summary of my reading from a excellent news report - New York Times:
- There has been an 82 % increase in Vitamin D sales in one year - faster that any other supplement
- Older women were getting too much D in the study groups
-Evidence suggests that high level of D can increase some health risks
- Most people get enough Calcium from their regular diet
- Vitamin D and Calcium are added to many foods by the food manufacturer. These include milk, cereals, juice and soups.
The American Society for Bone and Mineral Research and other groups applauded the report. It is "a very balanced set of recommendations," said Dr. Sundeep Khosla, a Mayo Clinic endocrinologist and the society's president.
At Youthing Essentials all our supplements are WHOLE FOOD - and have a natural dosage.

Sleeping Essentials - What's it all about?
Written by Harriet Diamond
I live the importance of having a good sleep every night.
It's been so amazing to me that every day now I am reading new research and studies discussing the hazards of not enough sleep for our bodies and what the effects of a good deep sleep has on our health.
I love when I can give you supporting material.
I'm focused on the sleep challenges that women in business have every day. If I can bring light on the subject, products that are natural and organic and most important bring results, and if I can help just one person, I am a happy being.
Here's an interesting statement:
The National Sleep Foundation research shows that 67% of American women frequently experience trouble sleeping, while 43% say that daytime sleepiness gets in the way of their daily activities.
It's true, I know it, and I speak with women every day that just can't get full nights sleep, perhaps because their little one gets up at 4am every night. And the working professional mom still needs to go to work, and reach those milestones in their business goals. Not an easy chore. Many are worried about the problems of not producing enough sales in this economy.
We know for sure that sleep is essential to our health. It reenergizes the body, renews our brain cells, and certainly helps us be more capable of handling different decisions that arise during the day.
Let's talk about this element of the puzzle tomorrow... Many Sleep-Deprived Professionals Blame Stress or I call it -
Unrelenting Stress (Read More...).
