EXCITEMENT TO READ THIS TODAY
from Mark Stibich, Ph.D.
You should think of taking care of your health as a form of national service. Your health care, if you are sick, will be paid for either by insurance (costs shared by all the insured, collectively) or by Medicare/Medicaid (costs shared by all of us collectively). Many of the diseases people get are preventable (not all of course, and for those insurance makes sense). We should think of it as our duty to ourselves, our family and our country to do everything possible to prevent illnesses.

I'm so happy to see you here Andrew. Thank you for visiting and sharing.

Aging needs a new perception because we all age but how we feel as we age is the difference of the choices we make everyday.

It's our responsibility to be healthy and ward off inflammation and disease.

Sure we are all going to age, but we do not have to feel old. That's the key.

Let's just get started with the first step, our mind.

Every morning I want you to wake up and say “I’m Youthing”.

Let’s get your mind focused with the right intention.

Let's talk again soon and I'll give you the next step and

how youthing essentials makes a real difference.

Hugs to you and be well,

Harriet

Sleeping is critical for a youthing lifestyle
written by Harriet Diamond, August 01, 2009
Dear Friends,

I’m listening to you! I know many of you are having sleeping problems and that’s due to a lot of the energy happening now in our economy. Our income, retirement plans, and business environment are changing and leaving us a little anxious to say the least. If we are not worried about ourselves, then we are concerned for our parents, friends and others we know that are hurting. Two of my girlfriends have recently died and three friends I know are fighting cancer. Enough to worry and think about right? Well, sometimes, this disturbs our usually restful sleep. So I read many articles to help you with this and here are just some tips that you can pick or just think about and see how it relates to you.

1. Avoid caffeine, nicotine and alcohol late in the day.
2. A heavy meal in the evening can lead to discomfort
3. Try to exercise earlier in your evening than right before bedtime.
4. Get into a habit of relaxing in bed with music or a book, but not a heavy action movie.(Sex is always great)
5. Try to keep a regular sleep schedule.
6. A darkened room works for some but personally I like getting up to the light in the morning.

I will keep adding to the list but this is a good beginning. We are putting together a special solution with products to help you for this problem, “Youthing Essentials for Sleep”. Call me if you want to learn more.
I’m always here for you!

If we need to find one or two absolutely critical 'things' for youthing - what would they be?

Hello Harriet - I've been reading a lot lately about Blue Berries and their health benefits - any comments? The reading I've done is more about brain health than general nutrition or youthing. Also there is so much hype its' so hard to tell the real from the not real.

Exercise helps when your body is hurting!
I’ve been searching for an exercise that will not cause additional stress to my body.
I just read about Tai Chi today. I enjoyed it 30 years ago so I thought I would revisit it now.
Tai Chi, the slow movement exercise from the Far East, can help ease the pain of arthritis, and improve your overall health.
It’s the best exercise choice for people with arthritis and musculoskeletal pain, and is a better option than strengthening, stretching and aerobic exercise plans.
In a meta-analysis of seven studies, researchers from the George Institute in Sydney, Australia discovered that Tai Chi improves pain and disability better than other exercises and health plans among arthritis sufferers.
Stay tuned for a video on Tai Chi on our Fitness page.
If you have comments on Tai Chi, please let me know.
Have fun!

The Benefits of Organic for Youthing

“I walk my talk”

In the 1970’s I managed the only health food store in Port Washington, NY called Renaissance. Of course at that time nutrition was not main stream like it is today. I was ordering organic products from the few companies that I found in California. (as silly as it sounds, this eventually was a reason for my move to the west coast and not the gold.).

But why am I still a believer today?

Let’s look at the benefits of choosing organic.

1.Organic products are good for the soil. I think that the way produce is grown with modern and scientific understanding of our soil, ensures fertility of the land that is used. It’s not using up the nutrients. It’s adding value instead of robbing it.

2.Let’s start thinking about how we make a difference in our environment. Organic production focuses on sustainability and looks at environment as a priority.

3.It’s good for people. Why not be away from the chemicals if we can make that good choice. There are more vitamins, minerals and antioxidants in organic food than non organic products.

4.Our skin care products are free of pesticides, parabens and fragrances. Personally I believe my face continues to look younger after 40 years because of the natural products that I have used.

5.My vote-let’s just be conscious of what we eat and how we grow it. Let’s question what we take into our bodies and pledge to protect it so we can be healthy and without inflammation for all the days ahead.

The importance of having fun exercising while Youthing

Always remember that when we find something distasteful we try to avoid it at all costs.Personally, I have to have a reason, an important one for me to exercise each day.
I am definitely motivated and have remained this way for the last ten years. I went to a senior conference when I was in my 50's and watched these incredible seniors on the stage showing their exercises, and talking about their marathons. And at that moment, I committed to being healthy and fit.The next step was to find the exercise that would be convenient for me everyday. Strangely enough, it became my treadmill, that although usually thought as boring, I made mine fun. I get on and have the best dance music on and it shakes my booties! I love it!

What is the next big challenge for Venture Capital Investing?

Health care, medical care, aging issues, brain health, fitness, clean tech, mobile, nutritional products?

Yes! I wanted to know because finally I’m an angel investor again, but this time focusing on my own dream business, Youthing Essentials.

I didn’t know what to expect attending the 20th conference this year. I’ve been there for the last ten years in good times and very hard times and yet this time had a definite feeling for hope and prosperity again.. And now the best of the best venture capital companies and founders were on the panel. I sat again at the front table so I wouldn’t miss a word or a shared comment amongst them.

It was said that great companies always seem to sprout during the hardest times. Entrepreneurs are unstoppable in their creativity. Just listening how these men have made a difference in helping startups left me smiling all day. I felt proud that so many luminaries were in the room, sharing their insights, past histories and thoughts for what the next step strategies need to be. And it was truth time. There was no BS. They were going to work on a new plan that would help the industry.

One, wondrous event was William Draper III was presented with the 2009 Lifetime Achievement Award and it was his son Tim Draper who presented it. It was really special how Tim talked and honored his fathers past achievements.

Some presentations will be in the website, www.ibfconferences.com.

But some words for the future include, disruptive to what already exists, look at past history for the new game, business model innovations, think beyond technology, be more efficient, and reduce wasteful consumption,

Happy Friday. People ask me often, what products am I personally using that make my skin radiant and my energy so high. And why is brain health especially important to me.

Well, Brain Health is really important to me. I want to make sure I’m doing everything possible now so I will function at my best into my 90’
s. Everyday when I talk to my Mom, 94 young, I am so grateful that she is still brain healthy. But to think that one day she may not be is pretty scary. I’m the head caregiver from 3000 miles away.

So today I want to tell you a little about what I learned from Mark Stibich, PH.D. who writes about brain nutrition for mental fitness and health in about.com.

Mark explains that all fats are not created equal. To function well, your brain needs a good supply of essential fatty acids. Since the body cannot produce these fatty acids, you need to get them from food.
Researchers think that these fats not only help supply oxygen to the brain, but work to protect the membranes of brain cells, prevent damage that causes dementia, Alzheimer's and other illnesses. When you check out our Nutrition section, you will see that we carry Ziquin EFA Complete (essential fatty acids), all the omegas in a system of maximum bioavailability which means it gets totally absorbed in my body. I take two teaspoons everyday – its’ part of my daily youthing program!

But I like to eat right to supply my nutrients, so what should I eat for my brain health?

Mark says that these fatty acids are found in fish oils, nuts, and seeds. The traditional diet of the Japanese, for example, is high in fish, which explains why the Japanese have one of the longest life expectancies in the world. You can get your fats from fish (wild salmon), nuts (walnuts), olive oil and seeds (flax seed). I personally include Reese skinless and boneless sardines in olive oil to my weekly diet. Did your Mom ever give you fish before exams and say eat it, its good for you, and its brain food? I don’t think I believed it then but I do now.

Enough said, this is just one avenue for my anti aging brain health. But I’ll tell you more later.

Let me know what you do for prevention and brain health

I got this email message from the Universe(tut.com) this morning. Placing it on my blog will be a good reminder for all of us that we can be empowered by our thoughts and choices.

Let's see... It's impossible to fail. Everything works out in your favor. The elements conspire on your behalf. There are always reasons to be happy. Millions of lives are touched by yours. Thousands of people think of you fondly. Hundreds call you their friend. You can have anything you dream of. Things just keep getting better. And you live forever.

Wildly unbelievable for a Hollywood script, but Harriet, this is your life.

Stranger than fiction,
The Universe

Headlines Can be Misleading!

Antioxidants prevent health-promoting effects of physical exercise in humans

This was indeed a funny day. My pledge for truth and facts kept me engaged to go further.

What's happening in the news? Well my mother-in-law, age 97 read the NY Times this morning and called us. There was an article today and the headline was "Antioxidants prevent health-promoting effects of physical exercise in humans". She was concerned because we believe in antioxidants, exercise and promote them as beneficial.

So I read the NY Times article and searched for the experiment that came to this conclusion. I could not find it in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Science so I took the next step and called the reporter for the Times. He then told me how to find the experiment that led to this headline for the public to read.

Well I had to laugh because and I quote the article-"Antioxidants are widely used as supplements but whether they affect the health-promoting effects of exercise is unknown." We evaluated the effects of a combination of vitamin C (1000 mg/day) and vitamin E (400 IU/day) on insulin sensitivity as measured by glucose infusion rates (GIR) during a hyperinsulinemic, euglycemic clamp in previously untrained (n = 19) and pretrained (n = 20) healthy young men. Supplementation with antioxidants may preclude these health-promoting effects of exercise in humans.”

Do you have elder parents? I have my Mom in Florida, age 94 young, and she watches the news most of the day. Well, there’s always information on tragedies, and catastrophes and for an elder alone, this doesn’t present a peaceful mindset. Especially when it comes time for the hurricane season and then she is the most stressed out person I know. But I understand she is all alone and regardless if the hurricane is truly coming or not, she is worried by what she hears. But that’s for another blog, anxiety and fear and what it does on our health.

It’s not easy staying youthful in a news filled world is it? It takes effort and I’m here to bring a more positive mindset to all of you.

A good lesson for today. Don’t believe all you read or hear. Check it out. Don’t let someone else agenda get you down. Start the day being in gratitude of what you have.

ARE TANNING SALONS HEALTHY FOR YOUR SKIN AND ANTI AGING?

Yesterday I passed a new tanning salon that just opened. It was packed with girls and women making appointments. Being a redhead, I never had a tan. I just freckled. But still, I had melanoma on my leg years ago. So I wondered if the salon was better than getting a tan in the sun.

Sure enough, ask or think about a question and the answer comes. I was reading an article this morning in a Womans Day. Because its prom season, it said that teen girls were going to tanning salons and the new research from American Cancer Society(ACS) said that although states enacted policies restricting under 18 from using them, the salons did not ask your age.

Part of the problem is that people think tanning booths are safer than going out in the sun. But the truth is that tanning booths are far more dangerous. They emit rays 15 times stronger than the sun and users under age 35 increase their risk of melanoma by 75%.

I don’t have a daughter or grandchild that age but if you do, this is important to know and share.

I just read something I would like to share and give you a smile for the day.
Inspiration of Sam Levenson:

For attractive lips, speak words of kindness.
For lovely eyes, seek out the good in people.
For a slim figure, share your food with the hungry.
For beautiful hair, let a child run his/her fingers through it once a day.
For poise, walk with the knowledge that you never walk alone.
People, even more than things, have to be restored, renewed, revived, reclaimed, and redeemed; never throw out anyone.
Remember, if you ever need a helping hand, you will find one at the end of each of your arms.
As you grow older, you will discover that you have two hands; one for helping yourself, and the other for helping others.

Nice, huh? What do you think?

Even on the news this morning, NPR, they were talking about exercise as being important. I know we have heard this before but now with the prices for insurance and medical care, it really comes down to what can we do for ourselves each day that will be preventative and ward off some problems. Sometimes we think that we have to do a lot or spend a lot of time on it. I find that just a couple of minutes in the morning doing some stretches helps me feel more balanced. It's a small piece of the big picture but a step in the right direction.
