Insect Youthing Pose Welcome to the Brain Blog from Youthing Essentials

On this blog, Youthing Essentials will discuss why and how you are going to help that marvelous thinking machine you carry around with you - your brain. But I will also discuss some new technologies for health and youthing and my personal views on ways to keep your life spinning in top gear!

There are 2 strategies that we will discuss; Brain Health and Brain Training. Brain Health discusses the brain as a biological system while Brain Training discusses techniques that can be used to improve the performance (memory, cognition) of your brain. In many cases these 2 may not be seperated or treated differently. However in order to acheive youthing success we must address both issues.

We also need to dispel several aging (or anti aging) myths about age related issues of memory, learning, retention and cognition.

Brain Fitness and Knee Injury

Good article in today Science News (http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2009/07/090724102915.htm). Some times good brain functions, brain fitness and brain health will actually help avoid and lessen knee injuries. I found this article while researching the best treatment for minor knee strains (my own of course). Why I find this important and to be part of this blog is the direct connection to brain health and the Youthing Essentials message. Keep your body fit (anti aging nutrition and brain health). It all forms the basis of healthy aging. Read the article and let me know.

"New research shows that training your brain may be just as effective as training your muscles in preventing ACL knee injuries, and suggests a shift from performance-based to prevention-based athletic training programs."

Running in circles - it's natural

Have you ever wondered why we seem to run in circles when lost? I have and I think someone knows why! According to news reported in Science Daily - "

"The stories about people who end up walking in circles when lost are actually true," said Jan Souman of the Max Planck Institute for Biological Cybernetics in Germany. "People cannot walk in a straight line if they do not have absolute references, such as a tower or a mountain in the distance or the sun or moon, and often end up walking in circles."

Now we know why sometimes we seem to be running in circles! There are lessons here.

Noise Affects Mood

Written by Rick Maltin

This was taken today from the Lumosity web site (www.lumosity.com) and will have interest to all of us seeking a calm and peaceful day. Noise in some cities will make us on edge and may lead to violence. Here's a good point from the site:

"Psychologist Arline Bronzaft's research has shown that, in the case of a school located next to a train track, students' performance is hampered by noise. On the quieter side of the school, students performed at a reading level higher than the students on the train side. When measures were taken to insulate the noise-affected students, their performance evened out."
